Lucy Li’s playful giggle might make people think she’s just a silly schoolgirl. Yet those who’ve seen her play know she’s all business on the golf course. But how did this 12-year-old prodigy become one of the most-talked-about young players in golf today?
Starting out
In 2002, Lucy was born to Chinese immigrants Warren Li and Amy Zeng of California.
One day, golf coach Joby Ross observed Lucy at the golf center where he taught lessons. She was with her mother and aunt, who didn’t play. Yet they seemed to be teaching Lucy from books and magazines. Ross says Lucy was 4 or 5 years old then and would play for hours.
On one occasion, Ross saw Lucy crying, so he went over to check on her. He feared that her mother and aunt were working her too hard. As it turned out, they had wanted to go home, but Lucy wanted to keep playing! |
